Bolsonaro successfully undergoes surgery for a bilateral inguinal hernia, according to his wife

São Paulo.- Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, in prison for an attempted coup, successfully and without complications underwent surgery this Thursday for a bilateral inguinal hernia, according to his family. «Surgery completed successfully! The procedure was authorized by Judge Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur in the Supreme Court of the process by which Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison for «leading» a coup plot after losing the 2022 elections to the current ruler, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The former head of state has been serving his sentence since the end of November in a special room at the Federal Police Superintendence in Brasilia.

Before entering the operating room, one of his sons, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, read at the hospital door a letter written by his father in which he reaffirmed that Flávio himself is his political successor and will run in his name for the 2026 presidential elections.

The retired Army captain, who is also convicted and disqualified, has been suffering from various health problems for months, including vomiting, dizziness, and hiccups, disorders apparently derived from the stabbing he suffered from a mentally ill person during the 2018 election campaign.

In fact, according to the medical bulletin released on Wednesday, during his recovery the possibility of subjecting him to another intervention will be considered to partially block a nerve in the diaphragm, in order to control his recurrent hiccups.

According to what was stipulated by Judge De Moraes, during his admission to the hospital, the former president (2019-2022) may only be permanently accompanied by his wife.

Four of his sons, Senator Flávio and the now former Rio de Janeiro councilman Carlos, as well as Jair Renan and Laura, were granted permission to visit their father on a punctual basis. The magistrate also prohibited the entry of computers, mobile phones, or any electronic equipment into the former president’s room. During his recovery in the clinic, which could last for a week, the far-right leader will be watched around the clock by at least two police officers at the door of his room.
