The measure responds to instructions from President Delcy Rodríguez and contemplates the enabling of national and international news portals after years of restrictions.

Caracas, Venezuela.– The National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) announced this Thursday the formal restoration of access to various national and international digital platforms and media outlets that remained restricted in Venezuela.

Conatel reported that internet service providers (ISPs) operating in Venezuelan territory received the technical notification to enable the domains of several news portals in their infrastructure, once again allowing direct access from national networks.

The decision was adopted in compliance with instructions from President Delcy Rodríguez and comes after the Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence recommended lifting restrictions against media domains as part of measures aimed at fostering freedom of expression, transparency, and pluralism.

CONATEL unblocks portals

The unblocking has already begun to be reflected in different providers. The organization VE Sin Filtro reported that at least ten portals regained access, among them Alberto News, Caraota Digital, Crónica Uno, EFE, Efecto Cocuyo, El Estímulo, El Pitazo, Monitoreamos, Runrunes and Revista Semana.

However, the organization warned that the measure does not yet mean the lifting of all existing digital restrictions in Venezuela. Before the announcement, VE Sin Filtro counted more than 200 blocked domains, dozens of them corresponding to media outlets.

Conatel indicated that it will continue to exercise its functions of regulation and supervision of telecommunications, while the authorization process will allow for the determination in the coming hours and days of the effective scope of the unblocking of the news portals.
