“England and Wales under red alert due to intense heatwave”

London.- The British Meteorological Office (Met) declared a red alert for extreme heat this Monday, with temperatures that could reach 40 degrees Celsius, for Wednesday and Thursday in central and southern England and Wales.

The alert, the highest in a three-level system, will be in effect from 9:00 local time (08:00 GMT) on Wednesday until 21:00 (22:00 GMT) on Thursday.

In this heat wave, temperatures are expected to exceed 37 degrees in the shade and reach 40 degrees in some places.

The warning implies that people should take measures in the face of extreme heat and companies must ensure the well-being of their employees due to the impact of the intense heat, while asking that vulnerable people, such as children and the elderly, be taken care of.

According to the alert, people are asked to avoid traveling by bus and train, while flights may experience delays.

Until now, the Met had warned of intense heat for almost the entire week, with temperatures that could exceed 35 degrees -although the forecast has now increased-, something unusual in the United Kingdom, where homes are not prepared to deal with this hot weather.

Health authorities recommend that people drink plenty of fluids, avoid sun exposure, and do not exercise between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
