“God is not Christian” and “God is nonbinary”: Texas Senate candidate’s controversial sermons

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian, has drawn attention for his unconventional views on religion. In a 2023 sermon, he said “God is not Christian” and argued that God is beyond human religious categories.

Talarico has also said that “God is nonbinary” and has described himself as a “Christian who hates Christianity.” He has criticized the idea that the United States is a Christian nation and warned against using religion to justify hatred or political gain.

His spokesperson defended his position, saying Talarico is a Christian seminarian who has devoted his life to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
