Bogotá.- A Colombian judge sentenced Carlos Eduardo Mora to 21 years in prison this Tuesday for his participation in the assassination of Senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, who died on August 11, two months after being seriously injured in an attack in Bogotá.

The Prosecutor’s Office detailed that Mora drove a vehicle and made it available for the prior reconnaissance of the place where the crime was perpetrated, in addition to transporting others involved in the attack who handed over the firearm to the teenager who shot the victim. Mora was offered 5 million pesos (about $1,300) for her participation in the criminal plan, according to the investigating body. For this case, 7 people have been arrested, including the minor who shot at the politician and who was sentenced on August 27th with 7 years of imprisonment for the crimes of attempted murder and manufacturing, trafficking, carrying or possession of firearms. The assassination of Uribe Turbay, the first political assassination of a presidential candidate in more than three decades, has shaken the electoral campaign and has revived fears that Colombia will repeat episodes of political violence like those of the 1990 campaign, when Luis Carlos Galán, Bernardo Jaramillo Ossa and Carlos Pizarro were assassinated.
