The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, arbitrarily detained by US troops from the US Southern Command early this Saturday after an intense bombing in Caracas, will be taken to the US military base in Guantánamo Bay, part of the territory seized by the North American country from Cuba, for a stopover before being tried in New York, reports CNN. According to “two sources familiar with the plans”, cited by the American chain, Maduro — after being kidnapped in Caracas along with his wife, Cilia Flores — was taken by helicopter during the Pentagon’s military intervention and taken to the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima, where he is being held as a prisoner of US soldiers. The stopover in Guantánamo would allow the Pentagon to transfer Maduro “more quickly”, because at that military base they can board him on an aircraft to take him directly to New York, where the Donald Trump government hopes to present him before a court to formally accuse him of “narcoterrorist” just like Flores.
