Netanyahu accuses Arab parties of attempting to “steal the election” in Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Arab Israeli parties and sectors of the opposition on Tuesday of attempting to “steal the election,” after police arrested three people suspected of participating in an alleged vote-buying operation in the south of the country.
The president’s statements were made during an election day marked by high citizen participation and an intense political dispute for control of the Israeli Parliament.
Netanyahu, who seeks to remain at the head of the Government, released a video message in which he pointed to the left and the Arab parties for attempting to alter the electoral process.
However, electoral authorities clarified that the arrests correspond to an isolated case and that investigations remain open, without the existence of widespread fraud having been established.
Netanyahu denounces alleged electoral fraud attempt
The Israeli Police reported that three people were arrested in the Negev region, in southern Israel, on suspicion of attempting to buy votes for the Islamist party Raam, led by the Palestinian-origin politician Mansour Abbas.
According to the authorities, the suspects are residents of the Bedouin localities of Segev Shalom and Arara Banegev.
During the searches carried out in their homes, agents found envelopes with tens of thousands of shekels in cash, as well as documents and other items that will be examined as part of the investigation.
The detainees were transferred to the district’s Fraud Unit for questioning and are scheduled to appear in court to determine whether their detention should be extended.

The electoral authorities specified that the suspects were arrested near their residences and that they had not yet reached the polling stations.
Israel records historic voter turnout
As investigations unfold, Israel records one of its highest voter turnouts in recent decades.
According to data published at noon by the Central Election Commission, 31.5% of eligible citizens had exercised their right to vote, three percentage points more than in the 2022 elections.
The figure represents the highest level of participation at that time since 1977.
Netanyahu went to vote at a polling station in Jerusalem accompanied by his wife, Sara, and subsequently urged citizens to go to the polls en masse.
“Go vote!”, the leader expressed in a message addressed to the Israeli population.
Prime minister warns about Arab voter turnout
During his statements, Netanyahu expressed concern about the levels of electoral participation recorded among Arab Israeli citizens, particularly in the south of the country.
The Likud party leader assured that the mobilization of that sector of the electorate exceeded, in some areas, that recorded among Jewish voters.
Likewise, he insisted on the importance of his supporters going to vote and presented the elections as a dispute between the continuity of his coalition and the possibility of a government integrated by opposition forces and Arab parties.
His statements come at a political juncture where Arab parties could play a significant role in forming a parliamentary majority.
Decisive elections for Netanyahu’s future
The elections are the first held in Israel since the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu faces an electoral dispute with the opposition, while early polls place his bloc behind the coalition led by former Army chief Gadi Eisenkot.
The formation of the next Government will depend on the distribution of seats and the agreements between the different political forces.
Meanwhile, the Central Election Commission maintains that the alleged case of vote-buying is under investigation and has not presented evidence that would allow the suspicions to be extended to the entire electoral process.
