NEW JERSEY.– President Luis Abinader described any proposal aimed at eliminating the vote of Dominicans residing abroad as a “nonsense” and a “setback.”
The president referred to the matter during a press conference held at William Paterson University, in New Jersey, where he defended the right of Dominicans living outside the country to participate in electoral processes.

Abinader reacted in this way to the proposals regarding the elimination of the overseas vote put forward by political scientist Rosario Espinal, due to the alleged level of abstention registered among Dominicans in the diaspora.
The president considered that, instead of eliminating this right, mechanisms should be sought to allow for an increase in the electoral participation of Dominicans residing outside the country.
