Nine killed in private jet crash in Florida’s Palm Beach County

Nine people were killed Sunday when a private jet crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Learjet 60 went down at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time in a residential area near the Cresthaven neighborhood.

The aircraft had departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was heading to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people aboard the aircraft died.

Videos shared on social media showed the jet crashing into the ground and erupting into a massive fireball, leaving a crater in the pavement.

Aircraft was flying at approximately 8,750 feet

According to flight-tracking platform Flightradar, the aircraft’s last recorded data showed it flying at an altitude of 8,750 feet, approximately 2,670 meters. Its maximum recorded vertical speed exceeded 32,000 feet per minute, equivalent to roughly 585 kilometers per hour.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the crash to determine its cause.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office announced that all lanes of Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and North 10th Avenue, would remain closed until further notice as authorities responded to the incident.

The identities of the victims and the circumstances leading to the crash were not provided in the initial reports.
