One woman dies after Tesla crashes into scaffolding in Midtown Manhattan

A 27-year-old woman was killed after a Tesla crashed into scaffolding in Midtown Manhattan early Wednesday, while the female driver, also 27, was taken into police custody at a nearby hospital, according to police. She has not been charged.

The 2024 Tesla first struck a mailbox at around 2:43 a.m. before crashing into scaffolding outside 315 Madison Ave. shortly before 3 a.m. Police said the vehicle traveled several blocks east along East 42nd Street before coming to a stop at Second Avenue.

Both occupants were taken to a nearby hospital, where the passenger was pronounced dead. The driver was listed in stable condition and remained in police custody.

Authorities have not released the identities of either woman pending notification of their families. Police have also not said what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, and the investigation remains ongoing.
