The UN will provide 100 million dollars for actions regarding El Niño, but requests more funding

Geneva.– The UN said this Monday that it is preparing to disburse up to 100 million dollars from a fund dedicated solely to emergencies to reinforce preventive actions in the face of the strong El Niño phenomenon that is approaching.

“In support of that response, we are planning, applying lessons from the past, innovating, and coordinating the humanitarian community. Our preparations are based on more sophisticated forecasts,” announced the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher.

The previous El Niño episode, between 2023 and 2024, left tens of millions of people in need of food, nutrition, water, sanitation, healthcare, agricultural support, and protection, he recalled.
