President Donald Trump said he was considering remaining in office beyond his current term, telling attendees at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, “I’m a little upset because, in two and a half years, you could have a different president. You could.”
During a lengthy speech at the rescheduled event, Trump also said he intended to pursue what he described as a “fourth term” and again repeated false claims that past U.S. elections were affected by widespread fraud.
Under the U.S. Constitution, the 22nd Amendment limits presidents to two elected terms, making another presidential run after a second term constitutionally prohibited unless that amendment were changed.
The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner was held three months after its original date was postponed following a shooting at a security checkpoint outside the venue. Authorities said a man armed with a shotgun opened fire before the event, prompting its cancellation and rescheduling.
