Washington.- The American president, Donald Trump, would have conditioned the unblocking of federal funds for the Gateway railway project in New York to rename the Washington-Dulles international airport and New York’s Penn Station with his name, according to local media this Friday citing anonymous sources.

Schumer reportedly rejected the idea, according to sources familiar with the matter cited by Politico, considering that the president could reinstate the project’s funding at any time if he wished. The White House has not publicly commented on this information. For their part, the states of New York and New Jersey sued the federal government on Tuesday to force the immediate reinstatement of resources. Last October, the Department of Transportation froze $18 billion in funds affecting this railway development called Project Gateway and other infrastructure plans, considering them subject to the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies of the Democratic governments. Since his return to power in January 2025, the Trump Administration has declared war on DEI programs. The prosecutors filed the lawsuit on Tuesday night in a New York court and asked a judge for an order to prevent the Department of Transportation from keeping the funds frozen, with the main authorities of the two states warning of job losses and the sum of costs they face. The Gateway, considered key to the northeast rail corridor, foresees a new tunnel and the modernization of existing infrastructure under the Hudson.
