Two students from California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) were injured in a deadly train crash in Spain that left at least 69 people dead, according to reports published Monday.

The collision occurred Wednesday in Urda, approximately 100 miles south of Madrid, when a high-speed train struck another train that was stopped. The impact caused a major wreck, leaving dozens dead and several passengers injured.

Cal Poly confirmed that two of its students were among those injured. One of them was identified as Leah Silver-Fajardo, a third-year student, through a GoFundMe campaign established following the accident.

University spokesperson Matt Lazier told KSBY 6 that Cal Poly was coordinating with the U.S. Embassy and its study-abroad partners in Spain to assist the students. He confirmed that both were receiving medical treatment.

“The university is in contact with these students’ families to provide support. In addition, Cal Poly is reaching out to its students studying in Spain and across Europe to offer support,” Lazier said.

Authorities have not provided further details about the students’ conditions in the information available.
