The armed forces detailed that the four men on board were “killed”, raising the figure to about 80 dead in more than twenty attacks since the operation began last August near the Venezuelan coast. The Southern Command’s new publication comes after Secretary of War Pete Hegseth christened the US mission in the region as ‘Southern Spear’, under the justification of combating drug trafficking from Latin America. Trump received Pete Hegseth and other Pentagon officials in the Oval Office this Friday to discuss “options” for action regarding Venezuela, including escalations in attacks, according to an exclusive report by the Washington Post, citing Administration sources. Faced with the announcement of the ‘Lanza del Sur’ operation, the Venezuelan government reacted by condemning the mission and calling it a “pretext for intervention”.
