U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and that oil tankers continue to transit the strategic waterway despite ongoing regional tensions.
Speaking to reporters, Rubio stated that “oil is moving through the strait” and emphasized that commercial shipping continues while diplomatic efforts remain underway to improve maritime security.
The secretary of state added that Oman and Iran are holding talks aimed at facilitating the safe passage of additional vessels through the strait in the short term, while broader discussions continue over what Washington describes as the denuclearization of Iran.
Rubio said progress has been made in those negotiations but acknowledged that no final agreement has yet been reached.
His comments come after conflicting statements from Iranian officials, who have maintained that Tehran is not engaged in direct negotiations with the United States and that its current discussions are limited to Oman regarding maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
