CHARLOTTE. – The world of motorsports is in mourning following the death of American driver Kyle Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and considered one of the most influential figures in the modern history of the category.
Busch died this Thursday at the age of 41, according to a joint statement from his family, NASCAR, and the Richard Childress Racing team. Hours earlier, the team had announced that the driver was hospitalized due to a serious illness.
The news caused immediate shock within the motorsport community, which bid farewell to one of the most successful and charismatic drivers of the last decades.
“Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch,” the joint statement indicated. “He was a generational talent, passionate, competitive, and deeply committed to the sport and to the fans.”
Over 22 full seasons in NASCAR’s top category, Busch won the Cup Series championships in 2015 and 2019, in addition to accumulating 63 victories, a figure that places him among the most winning drivers in the history of the circuit.
His dominance also extended to the other NASCAR national series categories, where he set records with 102 wins in the current O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and 69 victories in the Craftsman Truck Series.
A legendary career
Born on May 2, 1985, in Las Vegas, Kyle Busch grew up in a family connected to motorsports alongside his older brother, Kurt Busch, a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
His rise was meteoric. He made his professional debut with Hendrick Motorsports before establishing himself as a superstar during his historic stint with Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota, where he accumulated most of his victories and built one of the most recognized partnerships in the sport at the wheel of the iconic number 18 car sponsored by M&M’s.
He later joined Richard Childress Racing in 2023 to drive the number 8 Chevrolet, beginning the final stage of a career marked by successes, rivalries, and a huge emotional connection with the fans.
Nicknamed “Rowdy” for his aggressive style and defiant personality, Busch became one of NASCAR’s most polarizing figures: intensely admired by his fans and booed with equal force by his detractors.
In addition to his successes as a driver, he also left an important mark as the owner of Kyle Busch Motorsports, a structure with which he helped develop young talents and conquered multiple championships in the Truck Series.
His last Cup Series victory came on June 4, 2023, at Gateway, although in recent years he was going through the longest winless streak of his career.
Busch is survived by his wife, Samantha, his children Brexton and Lennix, as well as his parents and his brother Kurt.
