The ball returns, our passion returns

Today marks the beginning of the 2026-2027 Autumn-Winter Baseball Championship and, with it, returns one of the traditions that stirs the most emotion among Dominicans. The rivalries, the arguments over every play, the joy of victories, and the suffering of defeats are back. Because in the Dominican Republic, baseball is much more than a sport. It is part of our identity, a passion that unites generations and is lived with the same intensity in stadiums, homes, workplaces, and local corner stores.

The Tigres del Licey, the Águilas Cibaeñas, the Leones del Escogido, the Estrellas Orientales, the Toros del Este, and the Gigantes del Cibao return to the field to compete for the Banreservas Cup. This season also holds special significance, as it is dedicated to the memory of Don Héctor José Rizek Llabaly, a businessman who made significant contributions to Dominican sports. It is a well-deserved recognition for those who, from different areas, have contributed to strengthening an activity that creates jobs, drives the economy, showcases our talent, and keeps alive the dream of thousands of young people who aspire to reach the Major Leagues.

This sporting celebration deserves the support of all of society. But that enthusiasm must also be accompanied by responsibility. Stadiums must be safe, family-friendly spaces for healthy coexistence. The rivalry between teams is part of the charm of baseball, but it must never become an excuse for violence, insults, or a lack of respect. One can defend a jersey with all the passion in the world without forgetting that, above the colors, we share the same identity.

May this new season gift us great plays, full stadiums, families reunited, and many reasons to celebrate. May the teams put on a good show and may the fans demonstrate that passion and respect can go hand in hand. Our baseball deserves to continue growing as a sport, as an industry, and as a meeting point for Dominicans. Because when the call of “play ball!” is made, it is not just a game that begins: one of our country’s greatest passions begins to beat once again.
