SANTO DOMINGO.– Dominican athlete Álvaro Abreu gave the Dominican Republic its first gold medal in athletics this Sunday at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026, winning the half marathon event with a competition record.

Abreu completed the 21 kilometers with a time of 1 hour, 2 minutes, and 48 seconds, setting a new record for the Games and surpassing the 1:03:50 mark that had been set by Guatemalan Alberto González during the San Salvador 2023 edition.
The Dominican athlete also dethroned the defending champion, Alberto González, who finished with the silver medal by stopping the clock at 1:04:58.
The bronze medal went to Puerto Rican Héctor Pagán, who completed the course with a time of 1:05:33.
With this performance, Abreu kicked off the Dominican athletics participation in Santo Domingo 2026 in style and added a new gold medal to the national medal count.
