Crochet was the big figure of the encounter by throwing six solid innings in which he allowed only three hits and two walks, while he struck out eight batters to set the pace for Boston’s first victory of the season. The key moment of the game came in the sixth inning, when the lefty faced a bases-loaded situation with one out. At that moment, Crochet struck out Venezuelan Eugenio Suárez with a slider, and then retired Spencer Steer with another strikeout to escape the threat and keep the game scoreless. Boston’s offense reacted in the seventh inning. Prospect Marcelo Mayer hit a double as a pinch hitter, then advanced to third base after a sacrifice bunt by Venezuelan Carlos Narváez, and subsequently Ceddanne Rafaela hit an RBI single that produced the first run of the season for the Red Sox. Boston added two more runs to secure the victory in a game where pitching was the protagonist. Crochet, who came from complicated spring training, showed his best version at the most important moment and became the figure of the first game of the season. With this performance, the Red Sox start the season with a victory supported by their starting pitching, which made the difference in a low-scoring game.
