Eagles approach securing the regular season after defeating Stars 8-2

Santo Domingo. – Jerar Encarnación drove in three runs and Elih Marrero contributed two RBIs to lead the offense of the Águilas Cibaeñas, who took another step towards winning the regular season by defeating the Estrellas Orientales 8-2, this Sunday at the Tetelo Vargas Stadium.

With the triumph, the Eagles place their record at 29-13, with eight games remaining on the schedule. If they manage to secure the first position, it would be their first regular season lead since the 2012-13 season, when they finished with a 32-18 record. The Estrellas took the lead in the first inning with a run, but the yellow response came immediately in the second episode, when Elih Marrero hit a triple that tied the score against the green starter Óscar de la Cruz, who worked two innings and a third. Jean Carlos Henríquez pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, to earn his second win of the season without a loss. De la Cruz (3-3) took the loss after allowing four of the eight runs scored by the Águilas. Encarnación had an outstanding offensive performance, batting 3-5, with a run scored and three RBIs. Marrero went 1-4 with two RBIs, while Alberto Rodríguez finished 3-5, with two runs scored and one RBI. The Cibaeña offensive took control of the game in the third inning by manufacturing a three-run rally that gave them a definitive lead. In the bottom of that inning, a double by Rodolfo Castro drove in Raimel Tapia with the second and last run of the Estrellas, who now have a record of 9-12 as locals and only one victory against the Águilas in their last ten encounters. The Aguilucho rally began with a walk to Alfredo Reyes and a bunt single by Steward Berroa. After a strikeout, Alberto Rodríguez hit a double to right field to produce the tie-breaking run. Immediately afterwards, Jerar Encarnación drove in another with a single and Aneury Tavárez added one more with a hit against reliever J.P. Woodward. The Eagles extended their lead in the fifth inning with two additional runs, both driven in by infield hits. In the ninth, Encarnación sealed the victory with a single to center field that drove in two runs to leave the final score 8-2.
