Escogido secures third place with victory over the Eagles in Santiago

SANTIAGO DE LOS CABALLEROS. – The Leones del Escogido remained firm in the fight for the classification to the Round Robin by defeating the Águilas Cibaeñas 8-5 this Wednesday, in a game held at the Cibao stadium.

With the triumph, the scarlet team placed their record at 21-25, remaining tied with the Estrellas Orientales in third position in the championship, while the Águilas, despite the setback, continue to lead the table with a record of 30-15. The Escogido took an early lead by manufacturing a run in the first inning against starting pitcher Dinelson Lamet. With two outs, Socrates Brito hit a double to center field and later scored thanks to a run-scoring single by Yainer Diaz. The capital’s offense attacked again in the second episode. Franchy Cordero opened with a double to right field, advanced to third on a fly ball by Jonathan Araúz and scored after a wild pitch by Lamet. Immediately afterwards, José Marmolejos hit another double to right field and crossed the plate with a new wild pitch from the right-handed pitcher. The Eagles scored in the bottom of the second inning against Travis Lakins, after consecutive singles by Ezequiel Durán and Alberto Rodríguez, which placed runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly by Jerar Encarnación to right field allowed Durán to score. Lakins (3-0) was credited with the victory after a solid performance of five innings, in which he allowed only one run, three hits and gave a walk. The Lions extended their lead in the sixth inning against Yoan López. With runners on the corners and one out, Marmolejos hit a single to right field to drive in Pedro Severino with the fourth run. A double steal allowed Jonathan Araúz to score the fifth, while Marmolejos advanced to second and then scored on a hit by Jonathan Guzmán to left field. The Eagles reacted with a home run by Elih Marrero with two men on base between left and center field against Carlos Teller, closing the gap in the score. However, the Escogido responded with two runs in the eighth inning, driven by a productive double by Marmolejos to right field against Jonathan Hernández. Aneurys Zabala was in charge of closing the game by pitching the ninth inning scoreless and earning the save (1). The loss went to Lamet (1-3), who allowed the first three runs of the Leones.

For the Escogido, José Marmolejos went 3-for-4, with two doubles, two RBIs, two runs scored, and one stolen base; Jonathan Guzmán went 2-for-4, with two RBIs; Sócrates Brito, 2-for-5, with a double, one run scored, and one stolen base; and Yamaico Navarro, 2-for-5, with one run scored. For the Eagles, Elih Marrero finished 3-1, with a home run, three RBIs, a run scored and a walk, while Juan Lagares batted 3-1, with an RBI and a run scored. The Leones del Escogido will return to action on Friday, when they will receive the Toros del Este at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal stadium, starting at 7:15 p.m.
