Mars punished Atlanta’s star opener, Spencer Strider, with home runs in his first two at-bats. The first, a changeup, flew 445 feet to center field in the first inning to open the scoring. In the third, he repeated the dose with a fastball to center that sent 371 feet to right, with an exit velocity of 113.2 mph, adding two more runs and leaving the game 4-0.
With those three RBIs, Marte reached 481 runs batted in with the Arizona uniform, surpassing Steve Finley (479) and ranking in third place in the franchise’s historical list, only behind Luis González (774) and Paul Goldschmidt (710).
“It’s fun to watch Ketel get into that rhythm,” commented manager Torey Lovullo. “When he’s on and rested, he can carry the team. That’s what it looks like.”
Alongside Marte, Corbin Carroll also shined with the bat, going 3-4 with two home runs, four RBIs, and four runs scored. His second home run, a three-run blast in the ninth against Rafael Montero, sealed Arizona’s victory and was key after an attempted comeback by Atlanta.
On the mound, Zac Gallen delivered a solid 7.0-inning start, allowing three runs (one earned), with four strikeouts and only one walk. Despite a defensive error by third baseman Eugenio Suárez that resulted in two unearned runs, Gallen managed to keep the Braves’ offense at bay and add his eleventh start of at least five innings in thirteen starts this season.
With this triumph, the D-backs continue their good run and celebrate a historic night for one of their offensive leaders.
