Rays against the wall after 10-1 loss to the Brewers

The Tampa Bay Rays were left on the brink of elimination in the 2026 World Series after suffering a crushing 10-1 defeat this Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3, held at Tropicana Field.

After a 98-win regular season and seven playoff victories against the Yankees and the Guardians, Tampa Bay now finds itself against the wall, trailing 0-3 in the best-of-seven series.

The first two meetings had been much closer. Milwaukee won 3-2 in the first game and 5-4 in the second, both decided by the minimum margin. However, the third match took a completely different turn.

Dominican Freddy Peralta, who had been one of the main figures of Tampa Bay’s pitching staff during the postseason, had a difficult night. He entered the game with an ERA of just 1.08 in 16.2 innings of work in the playoffs, but allowed seven runs in 4.2 innings.

The decisive moment came in the fifth inning, when the Brewers scored eight runs with two outs and hit seven consecutive hits, setting a postseason record.

The Tampa Bay offense is also going through a worrying moment. Since the first inning of Game 2, when the Rays scored four runs, the team has only been able to produce one run in their following 17.5 innings. That run came thanks to an RBI double by Yandy Díaz in the ninth inning of Game 3.

During that stretch, Milwaukee has outscored Tampa Bay 15-1.

“It definitely takes the wind out of your sails,” acknowledged manager Kevin Cash when referring to the Brewers’ explosive fifth inning.

Now the Rays must win four consecutive games to become just the second team in history to overcome a 0-3 deficit and win a best-of-seven series.

History does not favor Tampa Bay either. Of the 43 occasions in which a team has taken a 3-0 lead in a seven-game series, they have ended up advancing 42 times. Only the Houston Astros in 2020 and the Boston Red Sox in 2004 managed to win the next three games after falling behind 0-3.

Boston is, so far, the only team that has completed the comeback and won four consecutive games.

The Rays will try to stay alive this Tuesday, when Griffin Jax takes the mound with the mission of extending the World Series.

“The only thing we can do is win tomorrow,” summarized Cash.

For Tampa Bay, the road to the championship no longer allows for any margin of error.
