Soto opens for the third time in his career and Mets shut out Rockies
SANTO DOMINGO. — The New York Mets bet on an unusual lineup and responded with a 4-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies, in a game brought forward due to the threat of rain.
The Dominican Juan Soto was placed as the leadoff hitter for only the third time in his career. In the game, he went 0-3, with one run scored, one walk, and one strikeout, fulfilling his role at the top of the offensive order.
The Mets’ attack was defined in the sixth inning, when Carson Benge hit a home run to break the dominance of Japanese starter Tomoyuki Sugano. From there, the New York team strung together four consecutive hits, with Soto negotiating a walk to maintain the pressure in a four-run inning.
From the mound, David Peterson was credited with the victory after a solid four-inning performance, while the bullpen completed the shutout. Craig Kimbrel and Devin Williams handled the relief, with the latter signing a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the season.
The manager’s move paid off, on a night when the Mets found offensive answers and pitching solidity to prevail with authority.
