San Juan. – The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) announced the official qualification system for the baseball and softball tournaments of Los Angeles 2028, a process that was approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and that includes eight international competitions as a pathway to access.

In the case of baseball, the 2026 World Baseball Classic will be the first opportunity to secure an Olympic spot. The event, scheduled from March 5 to 17, will award two places to the best-positioned teams from the American continent that are not yet classified.
As the host country, the United States has already secured its participation in both the men’s baseball and women’s softball tournaments.
Other routes in baseball
The
Premier12 tournament, which will expand from 12 to 16 teams in 2027, will award a ticket to the best team in Asia and another to the best ranked team from Europe or Oceania. This competition will be held in November of that year.
The last available spot will be defined in a six-team world tournament. Participating:
- The two best non-qualified teams from the Asian Championship.
- The two best non-qualified teams from the European Championship.
- The best non-qualified team from Africa.
- The best non-qualified team from Oceania.
Each Olympic selection can register a roster of 24 players, who must be at least 18 years old during the year of the competition.
Softball Ranking
In women’s softball, the first qualifying path will be the WBSC World Cup Final in 2027, which will award a spot to the best non-qualified team.
Subsequently, continental tournaments will be held in Asia, Oceania, Europe, Africa, and America, each with a direct ticket at stake. Finally, the teams that occupy the second and third places in certain continental zones will compete in a final qualifying event to define the last spot.
With this system, the WBSC seeks to guarantee global representation and a high competitive level in the Olympic baseball and softball tournaments in Los Angeles 2028.
