Cañeros del Este are left alone in fourth place

LA VEGA.- The Cañeros del Este added an important victory in their aspirations to qualify for the semifinals of the LNB Super League, by defeating the Reales de La Vega 77-68, in the continuation of the elimination phase.

The offense of the Romanenses, who remain alone in fourth place with a 12-12 record, was led by 19 points from Marvin Smith Jr. and 14 from Yeison Colomé.

Smith Jr., who contributed rebounds, shot 50 percent from the field (6/12) and 40 percent from three-point range (4/10). For his part, Colomé added 9 boards and 4 assists. Reymond Bastardo finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds.

For the Reales (11-13), who drop to fifth place, Anderson Mirambeaux stood out with 15 points; Ramón Galloway scored 13 units, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Rey Abad recorded 11 points and 9 boards.

In the fourth quarter, the La Romana team took advantage of the ball control problems the Veganos were having, and with a three-pointer by Colomé, they took a 72-65 lead with 1:35 left to play. A three-pointer by Víctor Martínez narrowed the gap with 38 seconds remaining, but Eusebio Suero responded with a long-range shot that sealed the game in favor of the visitors. 

After falling 20-10 in the first quarter, the Reales reacted in the second period thanks to two three-pointers from Mirambeaux and another from Galloway, closing the gap to 34-31 with 2:28 remaining in the first half. However, the team from La Romana responded immediately and extended the lead again with a three-pointer from Marvin Smith Jr. to set the score at 39-35 with just 17 seconds on the clock before halftime.

Colomé led the Cañeros’ offense in the first half with 9 points and 5 rebounds, tied in scoring by Matthew Herasme. Bastardo and Marvin Smith Jr. contributed 6 units each. For the Reales, Mirambeaux led the attack with 11 points, while Galloway added 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Malachi Richardson added 4 units, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.

A Richardson basket brought the Reales within 2 (43-41) with 6:55 remaining in the third, but a Smith Jr. three-pointer, with 5:09 on the clock, pushed the Cañeros ahead by 8 (53-45) again. Although the team from La Romana continued to dominate the game, the Veganos reacted to close the quarter down by 3 (60-57), after Randy Santos made a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left in the game.  

The partials ended 10-20, 25-19, 22-21 and 11-17 in favor of the Cañeros.

This Friday’s schedule

The Metros de Santiago will host the Gigantes Basketball Club at 7:30 p.m. at the Gran Arena del Cibao, while the Reales de La Vega will face the Héroes de Moca as visitors at the Moca 85 indoor arena starting at 8:00 p.m., and the Cañeros del Este will play against the Titanes del Sur at the San Cristóbal Sports Center at 8:30 p.m.
