Metros and Gigantes begin the LNB finals this Wednesday

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Metros de Santiago have returned to the final series for the tenth time and for the second year in a row, in search of their sixth crown in the LNB Super League. The Gigantes Basketball Club will try to prevent it and win the third championship in their history, in their fifth appearance in the event.

The first game will be this Wednesday, July 8th, at the Gran Arena del Cibao Oscar Gobaira, at 8:00 at night. The competition for the Banreservas Cup will be a best-of-seven series, with the venues alternating each game day.

The first division circuit final will pit the two teams that have dominated the tournament against each other. Between the regular season and the elimination phase, the Santiago team’s record was 19-7, while the San Francisco de Macorís team had 17-9.

Both Cibao teams tied 2-2 in their matchups from the previous stages, with three games decided by three or fewer points, two of which were won by the yellow team.

The Metros, led by the most winning coach in the history of Dominican basketball, Melvyn López, feature Juan Guerrero, Jhery Matos, Troy Cracknell, Jordan Hall, Omar Silverio, Anthony Fairley, Florent Thamba, Adris De León, among others, demonstrating an enviable depth upon which they have relied for their success.

For their part, the Gigantes, led by Manager of the Year Víctor Peña, announced with great fanfare the debut of star player Juan Miguel Suero, who will join this year’s Most Valuable Player, Luismal Ferreiras, as well as Francis King Fitzgerald, Charles Brown Jr., Juan Jr. Rosario, Stephen Zimmerman, Edgar Tejeda, and others.

The strength of the Metros has been their collective play. Including the semifinals, the Santiago team was the best in field goal percentage (49.2%), three-point percentage (35.0%), assists (22.1), and the team that allowed the fewest points per game (85.2). Additionally, their average of 91.5 points per game is the second highest.

The Giants stood out with a very high offense, surpassing the 100-point barrier several times. Throughout the tournament, the team’s average has been the best with 96.9 units per game, as well as in rebounds (44.0) and blocks (4.5). They also stand out in their field goal percentage (48.6) and three-point percentage (33.5).

This will be the second time that Metros and Gigantes face each other in a final stage. In 2019, the Gigantes, then known as Indios, won an epic 4-3 final that featured Paris Bass as the MVP.
