VIGO.– The forward of RC Celta de Vigo, Borja Iglesias, reacted with irony to the homophobic insults he received on Monday night after the match played against Sevilla FC at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium.

Through his social media, the Spanish international attacker responded to a video in which offensive shouts from local fans can be heard. “
How strange, this never happens in football,” wrote the footballer, in clear reference to the insults that included expressions like “let’s see if you die” and derogatory comments related to his orientation or personal expression.
History of Harassment
It’s not the first time Borja Iglesias has denounced this type of situation. In
last April, after Celta’s defeat against
FC Barcelona (4-3) —a match in which he scored his team’s three goals— the forward had already publicly exposed the volume of offensive and discriminatory messages he receives through social media.
On that occasion, Iglesias shared screenshots of comments that included homophobic jokes and expressions of hate, lamenting that respect and tolerance continue to be pending subjects in both football and society.
“We continue to live in a society where respect is still far away,” he expressed then, when denouncing the normalization of racist and homophobic insults inside and outside the stadiums.

Borja Iglesias has been one of the strongest voices in Spanish football in favor of diversity, respect, and inclusion, becoming a reference for thousands of fans.
