Vasco da Gama humiliates Santos of Neymar 0-6 before 53,000 spectators
São Paulo. – Vasco da Gama starred this Sunday in a historic 0-6 win over Neymar’s Santos, in a match corresponding to the twentieth day
The fans, stunned by the thrashing, chose to turn their backs on their team for much of the second half.
The Carioca team, led by former Brazilian coach Fernando Diniz, opened the scoring in the first minutes of the second half and extended the lead with goals from Philippe Coutinho (2), Lucas Piton (2), Rayan, David and Tché and Tché. It was the biggest thrashing that Vasco gave Santos in 98 years and the worst defeat suffered by the Santos team as a local in the history of the Brazilian Championship. With this result, Vasco rises to sixteenth place with 19 points, while Santos falls to fifteenth place with 21 points and one more match played.
Neymar, who completed the 90 minutes for the sixth consecutive match after overcoming recent injuries, went practically unnoticed, beyond a showy assist disallowed for offside and some effect passes. The brilliance of the court was dominated by Philippe Coutinho, considered the best player of the match.
This defeat marks Neymar’s biggest career margin, surpassing any other fall suffered in his stages at Barcelona, PSG and Santos. Many fans left the stadium before the end or turned around in protest, showing their discontent at the historic failure of the team that saw Pelé born.
