East Rutherford, United States.– Forward Neymar announced this Sunday his retirement from the Brazil national team following the Canarinha’s elimination in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after falling 2-1 to Norway at MetLife Stadium.

The 34-year-old attacker came on as a substitute in the second half, when the match remained tied at zero. However, a brace from Erling Haaland in the final minutes put Norway in the lead and paved the way for their qualification to the quarterfinals.
In stoppage time, Neymar converted a penalty to narrow the gap and score what will be the final goal of his career with the Brazilian national team. After the match, he confirmed that it had been his last game for Brazil.
“I tried. It started here, at MetLife Stadium, and it ended here. Now it’s over,” the forward expressed upon announcing his farewell to the national team.
Neymar arrived at the World Cup with doubts due to a calf injury suffered in May while playing for Santos, although he was ultimately included in coach Carlo Ancelotti’s squad. During the tournament, he was not a starter in any of Brazil’s matches.
With his goal against Norway, Neymar reached 80 goals for the Brazilian national team, consolidating his position as the top scorer in the history of the men’s team, surpassing Pelé’s record by three goals.

The elimination also marked a historic event for Brazil, which had not been knocked out in the round of 16 of a World Cup since Italy 1990, ending the international career of one of the most important footballers in the country’s recent history.
