Former Russian heavyweight boxer Denis Boytsov, once considered one of the division’s brightest prospects, died on October 17 at the age of 40 after a prolonged illness, according to TASS, citing his father. His father said Boytsov suffered a blood clot that caused his sudden death at home. “Three minutes and it was all over,” he said, describing the final moments.

Boytsov’s career was derailed in 2015 after he was found injured on railway tracks in a Berlin subway tunnel following a fall. He suffered severe head and arm injuries and was placed in an induced coma. After extensive rehabilitation, he returned to Russia to live with his parents, who cared for him. He had been unable to speak and communicated through gestures and eye contact. During his professional career, Boytsov recorded 36 wins, including 27 by knockout, and one defeat. His achievements included the WBC youth heavyweight title, a WBA intercontinental belt and the WBO European championship.
