Santo Domingo.– The president of the Organizing Committee for the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026, José P. Monegro, stated this Tuesday that the next edition of the event will be the largest in the history of the region, highlighting the record number of athletes, sports, and disciplines that the games will bring together.
The statements were made during the launch ceremony of the commemorative postal issue dedicated to the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, organized by the Dominican Postal Institute (INPOSDOM) together with the Organizing Committee.
Monegro valued the initiative of dedicating four postage stamps to the event, considering that philately constitutes a tool to preserve memory and understand the social evolution of peoples.
“Understanding the social phenomena and history of a country through a postage stamp is a beautiful practice. Actions like these ensure that, through philatelic activity, we can see part of our country’s history and the evolution of major social phenomena,” he/she expressed.
The sports leader maintained that being part of a postal issue of this nature represents a source of pride, especially because, he assured, Santo Domingo 2026 will mark several milestones for the region.

“We are facing the biggest Games in the history of Central America and the Caribbean, with the largest participation of athletes, 6,200; the largest number of sports, 40; and the largest number of disciplines, 53,” he pointed out.
However, he highlighted that the main asset of the event will be the hospitality of the Dominican people.
“They will be organized by the people with the biggest heart in the entire region, where it all began: the Dominican Republic, and by the city that welcomed diverse cultures and conceived them into one, Santo Domingo”, he stated.

Monegro emphasized that the celebration of the Games transcends institutions and governments, as he considers it a collective achievement.
“This event does not belong to one person, it does not belong to a government, it does not belong to an institution, it does not belong to Centro Caribe Sports, nor to the Organizing Committee, nor to the Ministry of Sports. It belongs to every single Dominican who feels proud and who is ready to be a great host,” he expressed.
Likewise, he announced that news related to the inauguration of the event, scheduled for July 24, 2026, could be announced soon.
“We have already held meetings with the President of the Republic and I believe that we will soon share some news that we will all receive with great enthusiasm regarding the participation of each one of us in these Games,” he indicated.
During his speech, Monegro also referred to the event’s official mascot, Colí, whose image is part of the postal issue presented this Tuesday.
He explained that the choice is because it is a bird endemic to the island and symbolizes the character of the Dominican people.

“It is a small bird, but with a huge heart, always active, cheerful and playful. That is how we Dominicans are and that is how we are going to show ourselves starting July 24th: as great hosts, cheerful and committed people. A small nation with a big heart,” he stated.
Finally, he thanked the Dominican Postal Institute for promoting an initiative that, as he said, reminds new generations of the importance of preserving national history.
“The Dominican Postal Institute reminds us, even those of us from the digital generation, that our history is written in every detail and that those details remain in the postcards and letters that are part of humanity’s memory,” he concluded.
