Los Ángeles.- Los dos gigantes tecnológicos Meta y YouTube enfrentan esta semana un histórico juicio en el estado de California por acusaciones de que sus plataformas alimentan una crisis de adicción juvenil.
The trial will take place in the Los Angeles County Superior Court and marks the first time the companies will present their case before the American justice system.
The process began this Tuesday with the start of jury selection.
The lawsuit was filed by a 19-year-old who claimed to have become addicted to the companies’ platforms due to the attractive design of Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, according to the lawsuit accessed by CNN.
The lawsuit included the tools TikTok and Snapchat, which managed to reach an agreement on undisclosed terms to avoid the first of a series of historic trials against social media platforms.
Furthermore, this complaint is one of several that are part of an open lawsuit against these companies, which covers more than 1,500 cases alleging personal injuries due to the excessive use of the platforms.
On the other hand, California Governor, Democrat Gavin Newsom, opened an investigation against TikTok to a business group aligned with US President Donald Trump.
“Our office has received reports (and independently confirmed cases) of critical suppressed content from President Trump and is asking the California Department of Justice to determine if it violates California law,” the governor’s office reported on X.
