New York Governor Kathy Hochul has launched FutureWorks, a commission created to study how artificial intelligence is transforming the labor market and recommend measures to protect workers as automation expands.
Hochul warned that AI could eliminate or significantly change many entry- and mid-level jobs that have traditionally provided a path to the middle class. The initiative is particularly focused on office, administrative, customer-service and back-office positions, where AI is already changing workplace routines.
The commission, chaired by former U.S. Labor Secretary Tom Perez, TIAA CEO Thasunda Brown Duckett and Brookings Institution researcher Molly Kinder, has 20 members representing business, labor, academia and government. It is expected to present its recommendations by the end of 2026.
