A “kindergarten” for robots has opened in Beijing, China, creating an experimental environment where machines can learn through touch, trial and error, and their own experiences rather than relying on human guidance for every task.
The experimental center was created by Chinese company Tashan Technology and is designed to provide robots with a safe environment in which they can develop their abilities through interaction with the physical world, according to Global Times.
During the opening, Richard Sutton, a pioneer in reinforcement learning, explained that the initiative aims to help robots learn about their own bodies and how to interact with the world through experience.
Sutton noted that achieving this goal will require not only new algorithms but also robots and environments specifically designed to facilitate learning.
The unusual “robot kindergarten” reflects an approach focused on allowing machines to acquire skills through direct experience, similar to how humans learn by interacting with their surroundings.
