Santo Domingo Este.– President Luis Abinader stated this Monday that, following the progress made in educational access and completion, the main challenge for the Dominican Republic is to raise the quality of learning so that students understand, reason, express themselves clearly, and develop the necessary skills to face the demands of a constantly transforming world.

During the opening ceremony of the 2026-2027 school year, held at the Espejo La Milagrosa Primary School, the president maintained that the return to the classrooms represents “a new beginning” for millions of students, from the children attending an educational center for the first time to the young people who will be in their final year before entering university, opting for technical training, or joining the labor market.

Abinader cited the most recent global education monitoring report, which, as he explained, recognizes the Dominican Republic’s progress in terms of educational access and completion, with more children enrolling in schools and a greater number of young people completing their studies.

However, he pointed out that the country now faces an even greater challenge: improving the quality of learning.

The head of state dedicated part of his speech to highlighting the role of fathers, mothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and guardians in the education of students and maintained that educational success requires joint work between families and schools.

“School educates, of course, but so does the family, just as importantly. And when both walk together, our children go much further,” he stated.

Abinader assured that one of his main responsibilities as president is to ensure that every boy and girl can access an education that allows them to develop their capabilities, regardless of where they were born or their family’s economic conditions.

Likewise, he recognized the work carried out by the Ministry of Education, the regional and educational districts, principals, teachers, and administrative and support staff to make the start of the new academic period possible.

More than two million students are called to return to the classrooms this Monday with the official start of the 2026-2027 school year in public educational centers in the Dominican Republic.
