António José Seguro wins the Presidency of Portugal

Portugal.- Former Socialist minister António José Seguro clearly won the second round of the Portuguese presidential elections, obtaining 66.14% of the votes, with 95.37% of the votes counted, against 33.86% achieved by the far-right André Ventura, leader of the Chega party. After the results were announced, Ventura publicly acknowledged his defeat and admitted that he had not achieved the goal of winning the elections, assuring that he would congratulate his rival once the official data was confirmed. The day was marked by high expectations in the face of the confrontation between two opposing political projects. From Caldas da Rainha, António José Seguro thanked the citizens for their support and highlighted the country’s democratic commitment, describing the Portuguese people as responsible and deeply attached to democratic values, in a message to the nation after his victory.

More than eleven million Portuguese were called to the polls to elect the successor to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who concludes a decade at the head of the head of state. Despite the rains and recent storms, the electoral process generally took place normally. However, in some areas affected by floods, it was necessary to change or postpone the vote. A total of 36,852 voters from various locations were unable to exercise their right to vote this Sunday, with the election being postponed until February 15th in those territories.
