Anyelo Vázquez calls for protest in front of the National Palace after Haitian demonstration

Santo Domingo.- Anyelo Vázquez, member of the Antigua Orden Dominicana 1844 movement, called for a protest on May 30 in front of the Palacio Nacional, after questioning a demonstration by Haitian citizens near the Government headquarters. Through a video spread on social media, Vázquez criticized that the authorities allowed the concentration and affirmed that, according to his interpretation, foreigners in irregular migratory condition should not participate in public protests in the country. During his statements, he also denounced alleged acts of repression against Dominican citizens when they hold demonstrations to claim rights or protest economic issues.

The activist called to participate in a mobilization scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, starting from the Juan Bosch Metro station in Santo Domingo, located between 27 de Febrero and Máximo Gómez avenues. According to what was expressed, the call also seeks to protest against the rising cost of living, a possible tax reform, and public financing for political parties. “We are going to protest to remove funding from political parties,” Vázquez expressed in the audiovisual, where he also maintained that party organizations should be supported by contributions from their own militants. So far, the authorities have not issued an official reaction to the statements or the call announced by the movement.
