Bellas Artes and Centro León announce the premiere of the documentary “Huellas de Fradique”
Santiago. – The General Directorate of Fine Arts (DGBA) and the Centro León, along with Story Center, the Agencia Creativa Conuco and the Embassy of the United States in the Dominican Republic, announced the premiere of the documentary Huellas de Fradique, a tribute to the life and legacy of Dominican folklorist Fradique Lizardo (1930-1997).
The screening will be in the auditorium of the Centro León, in Santiago, next Tuesday, September 30, at 7:00 p.m. As part of the program, the Dominican National Folkloric Ballet will offer an excerpt from its dance show “Fradique”, premiered in February of this year.
The production, carried out by the Centro León within the framework of the Fradique project with the support of the United States Embassy, highlights the transcendence of Lizardo’s work, a key figure in the research and preservation of Dominican folklore during the second half of the 20th century.
Huellas de Fradique presents testimonies, opinions from specialists, recordings, photographs, and documents compiled by the folklorist between the 1940s and 1990s, materials that are part of the Fradique Lizardo del Folklore Dominicano Fund, a collection recognized in 2014 as Memory of the World Register of Latin America and the Caribbean by the Memory of the World program of UNESCO.
With this initiative, the convening institutions seek to bring the new generations closer to the legacy of one of the great guardians of Dominican cultural tradition.
The Fondo Fradique Lizardo del Folklore Dominicano constitutes an archive of great cultural and anthropological relevance. Therefore, the Centro León has been working on its organization since 2003. As of 2008, a formal process of restoration, conservation, cataloging, and publication with specialized criteria began.
This collection brings together a wide variety of materials, including manuscripts, theses, monographs, research files, brochures, postcards, ethnographic objects, photographs, correspondence, as well as audio and audiovisual material.
Currently, more than 7,000 documents are available to users, including more than 2,000 press articles, 1,200 research files, 500 manuscripts, more than 500 pieces of correspondence, and more than 1,000 sound files. In addition, more than 1,300 photographs have been digitized and 157 ethnographic objects have been cataloged, all accessible through the institution’s platforms.
These resources are valued and disseminated periodically through publications such as the Cuadernos, Epistolarios y Archivos Sonoros of the Fondo Fradique Lizardo del Folklore Dominicano, with the purpose of bringing the richness of this heritage closer to the public.
