Santo Domingo.- The Attorney General of the Republic, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, appointed Roberto Santana Sánchez as the new head of the General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (
DGSPC) this Wednesday.

Santana is part of the Regional Penitentiary Academy and the International Forum of Penitentiary Experts.
He spearheaded the process of establishing the “New Penitentiary Management Model” which began in 2003 and operated until 2016 as a large extended pilot to give way to a single penitentiary system.
In addition, he promoted the creation of the School of Penitentiary Studies, now the Higher Specialized Institute of Penitentiary and Correctional Studies (ISEEPC).
With a long professional career, Santana Sánchez is a political scientist and professor emeritus at UASD, a higher education center where he served as rector, dean, and full professor in the faculties of Legal and Political Sciences and Humanities.
Also, he accumulates work experience as a consultant in public policies and criminal justice for the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU), participating in the design of the penitentiary schools of Panama, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Paraguay, as well as in the design of penitentiary public policies in several countries.
In consideration of his experience, Professor Santana Sánchez was appointed as the first Regional Director of the United Nations Center of Excellence for Penitentiary Reform. He has been a specialized consultant for technical evaluations of penitentiary projects in Ecuador and Paraguay and, likewise, an advisor on penitentiary management for Mexico, Argentina, and Uruguay.
Santana Sánchez is the author, co-author, or contributor to prison publications, including: The Penitentiary Reform of Latin America, Criminal Policy and Penitentiary Reform, Penitentiary Management Manual, Educational Offer for Penitentiary Studies, Criminal Justice and Human Rights, or the Handbook on Social Reintegration.
