Childhood and roots in San Juan de la Maguana
Born in Corral de los Indios, a small field in San Juan de la Maguana, Yulay describes her childhood as “beautiful”, surrounded by her parents, siblings, grandparents, and cousins. Her parents, “humble and simple” people, instilled values, provided them with a home, food, and took care of their education. Yulay was an outstanding student, always among the best in her class, according to herself. In addition to his academic skills, Yulay was a dedicated athlete throughout his childhood, practicing softball (second base), soccer (he became a national under-17 selection) and volleyball. Sport was a fundamental part of his development, taking advantage of the wide open spaces of his hometown to play and share. He also highlights the importance of cultural and sports clubs in the formation of youth, regretting their disappearance and advocating for their rescue. Although her mother dreamed of her becoming a teacher and her father of her becoming a doctor, Yulay had very clear goals from childhood and always wanted to dedicate herself to communication, a path that was not common in her community…. The Challenging Journey to the Capital
Her passion for the media led her to make the difficult decision to move to Santo Domingo, aware that the opportunities in her province were limited. Her first attempt in the capital was a “complete chaos”. Living in a humble neighborhood of Manganagua, she got a job as a production assistant on a program called “Punto de Salud”, which led her to go through “too many things”, including “a lot of hunger” and long daily walks. She felt “very bad” and “defeated” when she had to return to San Juan. However, her indomitable spirit drove her to try again. After saving money and with the help of Doña Kika, who served as her guarantor for her first house, Yulay returned to the capital: “Despite carrying countless resumes and attending castings on programs like Más Roberto or Canal 9 without success, there was a moment when I gave up on working in the media” and she dedicated herself to promotions to survive.Yulay Piña’s Rise in the Media: Radio, TV, and Digital Platforms
Her definitive entry into the media came unexpectedly when some cousins enrolled her in a casting for the humor radio program “El Negocio 89.3”. Her chemistry with Raymundo Ortiz was instantaneous, and thus began her career in radio. Subsequently, Raymundo took her to Bebeto TV, where her naturalness and organic essence opened the doors of television for her, standing out in animation. The jump to digital platforms happened with Doctol Nastra and the famous program “El Zócoleo”. Although initially proposed for a commentary podcast, people wanted it on the main panel. His largest platform to date has been “Sin Filtro Radio Show”. Santiago Matías discovered it during an interview where Yulay did not hesitate to debate and rebut with him. Her arrival on the program was a challenge, especially with her fellow panelists, who initially “didn’t understand her” and didn’t speak to her. Yulay acknowledges that his sense of humor and way of speaking may have generated a predisposition, as well as possible jealousy for being the “new girl.” Robert Sánchez was his main support, advising him. Despite the initial tensions, they achieved a good relationship, especially with Sandra Berrocal, with whom he has a lot of chemistry.
This authenticity is also reflected in his philosophy of life: “your word has to be consistent with your deeds or with the example”. In her personal life, Yulay is not currently in love, although she acknowledges that “little offers” appear. She has experienced love and heartbreak, suffering a breakup many years ago that deeply affected her. About love, she states: “When I fall in love, I fall in love and give myself 100%”. And although she firmly believes in love and commitment, marriage as “a piece of paper” is not a priority, citing the example of her parents, who got married after almost 50 years together. She would love to fulfill her dream of motherhood and have “a little girl”. Regarding her image, Yulay is open about her experiences with cosmetic surgeries, including a breast reduction that resulted in an augmentation, and enlarged glutes without her consent, which she underwent surgery again to feel “simple, thin, simple”.Throughout his career, Yulay has shown unwavering fidelity to his origins and his essence. “I will always take care of my essence, I came from the countryside but I never left the countryside, nor will I ever leave it. I love the countryside,” he affirms.
Dreams and the Future of Yulay Piña
Looking ahead, Yulay Piña has clear aspirations. Her biggest dream is to be a cheerleader for the El Escogido baseball team. Secondly, she yearns to be a presenter at the Soberano Awards and advocates for the inclusion of a “Panelist of the Year” category in the awards. With her determination and authenticity, Yulay Piña projects herself into the future with confidence, and although on some occasions she has been the subject of criticism for her views, and even for having a romance with “a man who turned out to be married”, the sanjuanera maintains her essence and security.
