Chile has suspended the import of pork products from all of Spain until regionalization is officially recognized – the outbreak of African swine fever in Spain only affects the province of Barcelona -, according to the latest information note from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
This country already kept its borders closed to the entry of pig intestines, but now extends that veto to lard and refrigerated or frozen pork, according to the note. On the other hand, this informative note already contains the update announced yesterday by the Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas, regarding the fact that the United Kingdom accepts regionalization on the same terms as the European Union, that is, it only prohibits the entry of product that comes from the 20-kilometer radius established around the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks registered in Catalonia (northeast).
The United Kingdom buys pork products worth 215 million euros annually from Spain, mainly meat. The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture confirmed last Friday, November 28, the first two cases of African swine fever in the country since November 1994, a disease that had been eradicated in Spain for 31 years, which has caused a stage of uncertainty for its millionaire export business. In 2024, Spanish pork exports reached 8.783 billion euros, of which about 5.100 billion euros were generated in EU markets – which remain open as normal, except for products from farms located in the affected area – and almost 3.700 billion euros corresponded to non-EU markets, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture.
