Santo Domingo. – The city council highlighted the positive impact of the “Plastics for Toys” program, an initiative that combines joy for boys and girls with environmental education and the strengthening of citizen commitment, during the celebration of its sixth edition.
The mayor thanked the media for highlighting the collective effort that makes this day possible, as well as the collaborators of the mayor’s office, the Council of Aldermen, public officials, and
representatives of different institutions that accompanied the event.
“We are a team of hardworking and committed people, who have learned from each experience to improve every year. This sixth version is the result of that learning,” said the official, highlighting the level of organization achieved in this edition.
He reported that the collected plastics are delivered to foundations and institutions that transform them into urban furniture and other alternative uses, contributing to the circular economy. He detailed that, between the six versions of
Plastics for Toys and the two editions of
Plastics for Schoolchildren, more than
33 million plastic bottles have been removed from streams, rivers, and streets.
The mayor emphasized that this initiative also helps reduce flooding by keeping drains clean, especially in the face of climate change, but stressed that the main achievement of the program is the education of boys and girls in environmental values and social responsibility.
“We compensate the families’ effort with good quality toys, but above all we ensure that each person feels valued and appreciated throughout the process,” he affirmed.
The program
Plastics for Toys is thus consolidated as a model of social and environmental management, demonstrating that it is possible to unite solidarity, education and care for the environment for the benefit of the community.
