Santiago.- The Regional Book and Culture Fair Cibao 2026, dedicated to Ulises Francisco Espaillat, served as the setting for the release of a commemorative collection that rescues documents, reflections, and analyses on the thought of the Dominican ex-president, within the framework of the events for the 150th anniversary of his government.
The Ministry of Culture presented four volumes dedicated to the figure of Espaillat, published by the National Editor, in an event headed by Minister Roberto Ángel Salcedo and held in the pavilion “The Power of Good Words”, at the Gran Teatro del Cibao.
The collection’s presentation was given by historian Edwin Espinal, who highlighted that it incorporates two fundamental facsimile editions for Dominican historiography: “Writings” (1909) and “Espaillat Papers”, compiled by Emilio Rodríguez Demorizi in 1962. Both works bring together documents, correspondence, and reflections of the statesman regarding the organization of the State.
The collection is completed with two titles from a contemporary perspective: “An Unfinished Utopia: Espaillat and Dominican Liberalism of the 19th Century”, by historian Mu-Kien Adriana Sang Ben, and “The Relevance of Espaillat”, a compilation of essays and analyses on the transcendence of his political thought, which includes the ideology compiled by Rodríguez Demorizi.
The initiative arises in compliance with Decree No. 640-25, which created the Sesquicentennial Commission of the Government of Ulises Francisco Espaillat, with the purpose of rescuing the legacy of this outstanding civil servant.
Said commission is comprised, along with Minister Salcedo, by the president of the Dominican Academy of History, Miguel Reyes Sánchez; the president of the Permanent Commission of Patriotic Ephemeris, Juan Pablo Uribe; the director of the General Archive of the Nation, Roberto Cassá; and the historians Frank Moya Pons, Eduardo J. Tejera and Edwin Espinal.
Minister Salcedo considered that the publication of these works, inspired by the memory of Espaillat, whom he defined as an ethical and moral president of the Republic, constitutes a way to connect the new generations with this transcendental figure of national history.
