Elías Piña, DR. – The Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) began construction work on the new bridge over the Artibonito River, in the municipal district of Guayajayuco, Pedro Santana municipality, a project that seeks to improve connectivity and strengthen road infrastructure in the border area.
The event was led by the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, ERD, and the Minister of Public Works, Eduardo Estrella, who highlighted the importance of this structure to facilitate traffic and reduce the difficulties that residents of that community have faced for years.
Eduardo Estrella explained that the project will have an investment exceeding RD$250 million and will be executed by the company Hierro, with supervision from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and financial support from the Government. He indicated that the bridge will have the capacity to allow the passage of heavy vehicles and will contribute to the development of the area.
The authorities indicated that the construction will allow transit between border communities to take place entirely through Dominican territory, preventing drivers from having to use routes that pass through the Tiroli community on the International Highway.

For his part, the Minister of Defense described the project as a work of strategic and social importance, as it is part of the actions of the “Strong Border” program, aimed at strengthening the State’s presence and living conditions in the border area.
Military, civil, and community authorities participated in the activity, including the governors of Dajabón and Elías Piña, who valued the construction as an important step to improve communication between communities and promote new development opportunities.
The community members of Guayajayuco expressed their satisfaction with the start of the work and stated that the bridge represents a response to a demand expected for decades. In addition, they requested that the MOPC pave the road that connects Dajabón with Elías Piña, considering that this project would complement the impact of the new infrastructure.
