Santo Domingo.– The director of the Dr. Ney Arias Lora Traumatological Teaching University Hospital, Dr. Víctor Rosario Suazo, highlighted that the center’s priority is to preserve the lives of patients, reporting that 98% of those admitted due to trauma survive, according to the hospital’s internal statistics.
The specialist stated that this result reflects the strengthening of specialized care provided by the National Trauma Network, a strategy that has contributed to reducing the mortality of patients affected by traffic accidents by six percent during its two years of operation.
“The patient who arrives at the hospital has a 98% chance of survival, according to the hospital’s internal statistics,” stated Rosario Suazo.
The orthopedist reported that the center receives around 150 patients daily for emergencies, a figure that increases to between 250 and 300 during the weekends. Likewise, he indicated that about 700 consultations are performed each day.
He added that the hospital has 60 inpatient beds and currently maintains an occupancy rate of nearly 80%.

During an interview on the program La Revista 110, Rosario Suazo explained that the Network was created in response to the high number of traffic accidents recorded in the Dominican Republic and to guarantee specialized and timely care for polytraumatized patients.

“The country has recorded nearly three thousand deaths per year due to traffic accidents since 2016. 70% correspond to motorcycle accidents, and the National Trauma Network has come to improve those indicators,” he noted.
He indicated that it is composed of the Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia Trauma Hospital, in Higüey; the Azua Trauma Hospital; the Professor Juan Bosch Trauma Hospital, in La Vega; the Dr. Darío Contreras Hospital; the Dr. Ney Arias Lora Hospital; the Puerto Plata Trauma Hospital; the Valverde Trauma Hospital and the Yaguate Trauma Hospital, in San Cristóbal, which is scheduled to be inaugurated next November.
The specialist highlighted that patients, regardless of their social or economic status, have access to prosthetics when they require them. He explained that these devices are covered by Health Risk Administrators (ARS), both in the contributory and subsidized regimes.
