Doubts persist 18 days after the death of student Estephora during a field trip in Santiago

Santiago. – Eighteen days after the death of the adolescent, Stephora Anne-Mircie Joseph, 11 years old, during a school excursion in Santiago, the case continues shrouded in a growing veil of mystery, while family members, community members, and educational sectors demand clear answers about the circumstances in which the tragedy occurred. The institutional silence of the educational entity has caused outrage and concern among parents, teachers, and community residents, due to the hermetic handling of the case. Among the unanswered questions are whether the student received immediate help, whether medical personnel were available, and what the exact conditions were that led to the tragedy.

The minor died on November 14 during a recreational activity organized by the Leonardo Da Vinci school at the Los Caballos estate in Gurabo, where, according to reports, she would have lost her life by drowning. However, to date, the authorities have not even offered a precise report, increasing concerns about the handling of the investigation. As of the date, the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) has not yet issued a conclusive report on the official cause of death, further fueling the uncertainty surrounding the event. Meanwhile, Stephora’s family members have insisted that they need “the whole truth” and have demanded speed from the authorities to establish possible responsibilities, recalling that it was an activity organized by an educational institution called to guarantee safety and supervision throughout the event. The lack of information has generated complaints of a possible delay motivated by racism, which has ignited a debate on social media and in community sectors. Faced with increasing public pressure, the Attorney General of the Republic, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, met with the minor’s family and ordered the investigation to be strengthened. The instruction was directed to the General Directorate of Prosecution, headed by Deputy Attorney Wilson Camacho, and to court prosecutor Olga Diná Llaverías, head of the National Directorate for Children, Adolescents and Family. Meanwhile, in the educational community, concern persists, and parents of other students are asking for the facts to be clarified to prevent similar tragedies from happening again during excursions or school activities. But while the authorities of the Public Ministry deepen the investigations and prepare to offer a report on the events that occurred in the case to clarify the tragic event, speculation in the absence of information gains space in the media and the various sectors of Santiago and the country.
