Santo Domingo.- The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT), together with the United Nations and the company JCDecaux, launched this Thursday the “Voices for Road Safety” campaign, an international initiative that seeks to raise awareness about the prevention of traffic accidents and contribute to the reduction of deaths and injuries on Dominican roads.
During the event, the executive director of INTRANT, Milton Morrison, highlighted that the campaign represents a joint commitment between national and international institutions to promote a culture of respect for traffic regulations and save lives.
“We need to tackle this issue that has become a headache for every Dominican family. Using the faces of influential figures will help us bring that message of awareness to the entire population,” Morrison expressed.
The official recalled that, although statistics reflect a reduction of approximately 4% in traffic accident deaths compared to 2024, he insisted that “a single life lost is already too many,” which is why he assured that INTRANT will continue to promote road safety prevention and education actions.
Likewise, he highlighted that the Dominican Republic is participating for the first time in this international campaign, which is carried out in more than 80 countries, thanks to the support of the United Nations and JCDecaux.

For his part, Bernardino Vitoy, representative of the Pan American and World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in the Dominican Republic, explained that the initiative seeks to reduce deaths, injuries, and disabilities caused by road accidents through simple educational messages, focused on life-saving practices.
Among the main recommendations of the campaign are the use of protective helmets by motorcyclists, seat belts for drivers and passengers, as well as respect for speed limits and other measures contemplated in the National Road Safety Plan.

Vitoy pointed out that road safety education constitutes an essential component for transforming the behavior of road users, although he emphasized that public policies aimed at having safer roads, vehicles in better conditions, and effective controls are also necessary to reduce accident rates.
Representing the campaign ambassadors, Dominican racing driver Jimmy Llibre described road safety as one of the main challenges facing the country and expressed his satisfaction in being part of an initiative aimed specifically at raising awareness among young people.
“This is not a video game or a game. We are talking about lives, about families. One leaves their home without knowing if they will return alive, which is why we must all assume our responsibility,” he stated.
Although he acknowledged the efforts being made by the authorities, Llibre considered that the country must apply stricter sanctions against those who violate traffic regulations in order to achieve a change in behavior.
Finally, he urged citizens to take road safety seriously and remember that every decision behind the wheel can make the difference between arriving home or becoming another victim of traffic accidents.
The statements were offered prior to the “Safe Paths” discussion, held this Thursday at the Santo Domingo Institute of Technology (INTEC), as part of the “Voices for Road Safety” campaign.
This campaign is launched within the framework of the Central American Games, an event that will serve as a platform to promote road safety among young people.
