New York. – The Dominican Republic reiterated before the United Nations (UN) its commitment to accelerate national actions to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a public health problem by the year 2030, within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
n” “nDuring their participation in an international meeting on global health, Dominican representatives highlighted the country’s progress in prevention, early diagnosis, and access to antiretroviral treatment, as well as the strengthening of public policies aimed at reducing new infections and eliminating the stigma associated with the disease.
n” “nHealth authorities emphasized that the Dominican approach is based on science, human rights, international cooperation, and national leadership, which are fundamental pillars recommended by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

n” “nThe Dominican government explained that the national strategy against HIV is focused on the expansion of combined prevention services, free access to testing, comprehensive care for people living with the virus, and the promotion of educational campaigns for the general population.

Likewise, the joint work with international bodies and civil society organizations was highlighted to ensure a more inclusive response, especially aimed at vulnerable populations.
In that sense, the country reaffirmed that meeting the 2030 goal depends not only on access to medicines, but also on the elimination of social barriers, the reduction of stigma and discrimination, factors that still affect the global response to HIV.
